About the Author
Timothy Rasinski is a professor of literacy education at Kent State University. He has written over 200 articles and has authored, co-authored or edited over 50 books or curriculum programs on reading education. He is author of the best selling book on reading fluency entitled The Fluent Reader, published by Scholastic, and co-author of the award winning fluency program called Fluency First, published by the Wright Group. His scholarly interests include reading fluency and word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and readers who struggle. His research on reading has been cited by the National Reading Panel and has been published in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Reading Psychology, and the Journal of Educational Research. Tim is currently writing the fluency chapter for Volume IV of the Handbook of Reading Research.Tim recently served a three year term on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association and from 1992 to 1999 he was co-editor of The Reading Teacher, the world's most widely read journal of literacy education. He has also served as co-editor of the Journal of Literacy Research. Rasinski is past-president of the College Reading Association and he has won the A. B. Herr and Laureate Awards from the College Reading Association for his scholarly contributions to literacy education.Prior to coming to Kent State Tim taught literacy education at the University of Georgia. He taught for several years as an elementary and middle school classroom and Title I teacher in Nebraska.

As a homeschooling mom, I love things that allow my children to use their brains and think. The word ladders are great. We purchased this item for both 2nd and 4th grade. Both books We do one every day we school. The kids enjoy doing this activity and it is mom approved as well. I have searched the Internet for free word ladders and none I have found compare to these. The quality is very high in my opinion.
I am a third grade teacher and use this as an intervention. I love it! I actually have older kids work with my 3rd graders on these. Some can be a little difficult but great way to use word sounds and change them up to make new words. I highly recommend!
I homeschool and my 4th grader is having some issues with spelling. I decided to try giving him these Word Ladders and they have been helpful. He enjoys them but does need some help sometimes. A few I can't figure out without cheating! But I do think he is paying more attention to the order of letters in words.
I bought this for my 3rd grader to use as part of our homeschooling and we are enjoying it so far! It is a great way to practice spelling and boost vocabulary. This one does not have as specific clues as the younger level, it just gives the clue as to the meaning of the next word up on the ladder, and does not tell which letter to choose. It is a fun challenge for my son and we are both enjoying it!
My son is in 3rd grade and has fun working in this book. I enjoy the way this book makes the kids think think 'outside the box' to come up with words and sometimes learn new ones.
I love these and was saddened to find out that they didn't have the next grade for my oldest son who also loved doing these with me. My younger son is still coming around, but these are definitely informative, expands vocabulary, and sometimes even challenges me in the older graded books.
If we do not do a word ladder every day, the students complain. They love them. I have used others but the students like these the best. They are easy to use and introduce words that my students do not generally see in their reading program. I teach in a life skills program and often the reading material is stilted and boring. These are lively and engaging.
I homeschool both of my children in grades 6th and 3rd. These workbooks are great! They love to do a page a day! Nice simple challenges were they are learning new words, working on spelling, and problem solving a riddle all at once!
