My interest in the Greene brothers started from my interest in their furniture as I enjoy building furniture. My interest has expanded to their architecture as well.Greene & Greene gives history of their work and a little about their lives.The drawbacks to the book are in my opinion are 1. The description of the architecture is detailed and not supported by enough pictures and so is hard to follow. Most of the illustrations are too small to really see. That is especially true of the drawings 2. There is just enough about the Charles and Henry Greene to tantalize you but not enough to satisfy you.The pluses of the book are that even with the drawbacks, you get a feel for the wonderful work that they did and their thought processes. They had a rare feel for the totality of the fabulous homes they designed.
An above normal production with some very nice touches. Very well written and complete text although there is a painful flaw to this publication. The floor plans and a vast number of the descriptive pictures are improperly sized for viewing. The Greene & Greene art-like floor plan drawings have been reduced to something difficult to read and interpret. Considering the price of this volume, this is an inexcusable flaw. As a coffee table publication this might be acceptable but for the money its a shame the publisher did not catch this oversight.
Charles and Henry Greene are key figures of the American Arts and Crafts movement. This large-scale monograph on the Greenes' life and complete range of works features new scholarship, newly commissioned photography, and previously unpublished archival material including recently discovered projects. Charles and Henry Greene's work is concentrated in California - where they practised architecture together from 1906-22. Great value and very complete monograph.
Nice book, lots of nice pictures of houses, but I was looking for more pictures and drawings of their furnature
It is difficult to imagine how someone could take such a fabulous subject and make such a boring book of questionable use. No attempt was made to make the information interesting. It is the print equivalent of a boring professor who reads his lecture. The tiny print is tedious to read and the paragraphs run on and on. While there are some very nice photos which are useful in studying the details of the woodwork and furniture, many of them and most of the house plans are so small as to be useless. Even a magnifying glass did not help with some of the house plans. The book is a huge disappointment to one who has half a dozen others. I would not buy this book unless I was sure it contained photos otherwise unavailable. In that case, buy the cheapest copy you can find.
I am a furniture maker working in the G&G style and have been a serious fan for many years. In fact, I have just finished writing my own book on Greene and Greene furniture ( from a woodworker's viewpoint). I relied on information found in Edward R. Bosley's book for my own book. I found his book to be the most in-depth and accurate book available on the subject of Greene and Greene. If you are a fan of G&G this book is an absolute necessity! I would also highly recommend Bruce Smith's book "Greene and Greene Masterworks".
I have read every book available today on Greene & Greene and have found Mr. Bosley's to be the most informative. Many of the images found throughout are unique to this book and are an excellent companion to the text. If you're looking for either a general introduction to Greene & Greene or a valuable reference to their life and work, this is the book to own.
