His ten poems series has changed my life. With each of the essays he presents and explains how the poems he has chosen are relevant to our lives. I have been in love with poetry for as long as I can remember and Roger Housden has been the vehicle that enlightened me that this great burning inside is my soul consumed by the riches all the world has has offered me.....and the price has been worth the cost of sogreat a journey. Thank you Mr Housden for sharing such love, such beauty.
The first poem alone is worth the price of the book. As with any collection of poetry, the poems will resonate with you differently every time you reread them in the future. My only suggestion is for the reader to realize that the meaning of the poem is not be limited by what the author says it. Good book.
Roger does it again with his knowledge and choices of poetry but also a theme which is so relevant in todays world. The book broadensone's perspective on living our lives in the best way possible.
Wonderful poet.
His commentaries are excellent. I did not think all of the poems worked in terms of his theme. I was hoping for poems that were more associated with healing, especially during these dark times.
Beautiful poems and commentary. Housden is a genius. I've used his Ten Poem books for a discussion group and they are wonderful for that purpose.
I have all of Roger's "Ten Poems" books and have savored each one, gone back to them over and over and shared them with friends. This one, at this particular time in my life, is particularly meaningful and helpful, but then, so have all the others been just the right topic at just the right time.. Roger has a unique ability to choose poems that go straight to the heart of an issue, and his commentaries -- always transparent, always beautifully worded, always provocative -- are simply wonderful. Roger confronts me over and over with the places in myself where I need to go to become more fully alive, more fully human. His commentaries and the poems strip me of illusions and invite me to see life more clearly and honestly.
Poetry as a tool? Poetry making a difference? Hard for me to imagine. We've got self help books galore, business success books even more, and it sometimes seems that us folks are not an easy crew of students to reach and teach, given all the attempts, or perhaps that's a sign of just how much help we need. But how can figuring out what a bunch of strange, poetic phrases might mean, when the author could have come right out and said it--unless you like puzzles--how can poetry help?How ignorant I was! After actually opening the book, reading past the first poem (that didn't seem that uplifting!), and onto what the author, Roger Housden, has up his sleeve here, I learned that this book wasn't his first. He's had a series of "Ten Poems ...." series, such as Ten Poems to Change Your Life (hard to believe), and Ten Poems to Last a Lifetime (that I could believe). And he explains things that make a difference when you go back and read the poem again (they are not long poems!)I've been through difficult times, so I'd be a good case study. What might these poems do for me? I take the first one (again), and read it over. I kinda get the idea of "Good Bones," by Maggie Smith, that although life is at least half bad, if not worse, there's some good in it that makes it worth it. I see one poetic effect in the continual repeating of the phrase, "though I keep this from my children." We know what it means but it is not said. Children's innocence is worth something, worth a chance at being true. You can't help but find where you believe it, even though you doubt it. It's not said you can't refute it. There's a left over effect that comes out positive."The Thing is," by Ellen Bass is a poem about gratitude. At least that was my first take on it. There are several books out there on gratitude. I've written about it myself. It is easy to say, "it helps to feel grateful," but it is not easy to accomplish when you most need it. What can a poem accomplish that these best sellers can't? After I read the poem, I was surprised that Mr. Housdon compared it to a Zen master sharp view of things. I looked again, read the poem again. I noticed the second time what I had not the first, how the wording creates synesthesia, the merging of the senses, because you can almost taste, or feel, the images in your mouth. It's a sublminal effect, working in the background to create mood. It's kind of a process of mindfulness. Soon there is a shift from the contents in the mind to the mind's awareness itself. It is similar that shift from the focus on an event in life to life itself. This shift in perception is a miracle, according to some perspectives, and the poem achieves it.Clearly there's a magic to poetry, yet it seems we need a literature teacher, like Housden, to point the way. I am reminded of the situation with dreams. They are a tremendous resource in many respects. Yet it seems that we need coaches to "dreamsplain" to us and train us how to read our own creations. Dreams have a message, and like poetry, feel that it's best to deliver the message via an experience. Poems are to be experienced. I do feel a bit better having explored these two poems. There are eight more and I'll check in on them later, next time I'm in the dump!
