Laura van den Berg is the author of the story collections What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us and The Isle of Youth, and the novel Find Me. She is the recipient of a Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Bard Fiction Prize, an O. Henry Award, and a MacDowell Colony fellowship. Born and raised in Florida, she lives in Cambridge, MA, with her husband and dog.

The book flap on THE THIRD HOTEL calls it “surreal” and “mystifying.” I think that is a nice way of saying “unintelligible” and “confusing.” The story made little sense to me. I read and reread paragraphs, hoping that the problem was my own inattention. Perhaps Laura van den Berg said something that I missed, which was certainly possible; she snuck details into paragraphs that seemed to have nothing to do with anything.I could be wrong when I describe this story. I can only say this is how it seemed.Clare seems to be having a nervous breakdown after her husband died. I doubt my impression about this, though, because she also didn’t seem with-it in some of her flashbacks from before he died.Clare travels to Havana, Cuba, to attend a horror film festival, a trip her husband had planned. Regardless of the number of times I reread paragraphs, I couldn't figure out why. I guess she thinks she will learn something about him.While in Havana, Clare sees her husband. For most of the rest of the book, she follows him around. Remember, he’s dead.Clare does a lot of weird, crazy things, and the people she encounters often seem unreal. Heck, everything seems unreal.This book made me feel stupid.

Over the decades, my favorite novels go deep inside the insane heads of those whose disjointed lives find uncanny expression in the external world. I'm thinking of Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman, Alberto Moravia's Contempt, Antonio Di Benedetto's Zama, Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North, and Kem Nunn's Pomona Queen. Readers of those authors will probably be drawn to Laura Van Den Berg's The Third Hotel.The protagonist Clare is widowed and decides to go to Havana for a horror movie festival that was originally planned with her husband, a film critic. Strange apparitions occur, and Clare finds that her Havana locale, including the strange hotel, have an uncanny resemblance to her off-kilter inner life. The plot tends to go round and round, so instead of fretting over the novel's lack of cohesive plot, look at this novel as the unfolding of someone who is crushed by grief, the absence of a world she can believe in, and is losing her mind. It is superbly written and should stay vital for decades to come.

This is a multi-layered and strange novel about a woman, Clare, who sees her dead husband while in Cuba for a film festival. I enjoyed the air of mystery around Clare and her increasing difficulties in discerning what is real and what is not. After finishing the book I'm not sure what really happened and what didn't, but that's OK - not everything needs to be tied up neatly at the end of novels or movies to make it worth the time to read. I'm giving the book to my sisters to read. I think they'll also like it. Might read it again in a year or so.

Another reviewer said this was a book about nothing - reminds me the Seinfeld adage, a show about nothing - except maybe Havana (gets one star for that). I couldn't tell whether this woman was dreaming this, or if it was really happening, or if she was in a psych ward, or maybe tripping on drugs. I enjoyed the descriptions of Havana, and that's about it. This story wanders from present to past, back and forth, with no clear direction. I kept waiting for something to happen (yeah! her and 'Richard' are going to go do something exciting!) but instead, more boring expository writing about their past and their feelings. I have no idea why NPR and NYT gave such good reviews, this book was pretty bad.

Unusual style of writing, more unusual thought structure. You feel drawn into the book, become a part of the story. Subtle creepy, subtle horror, can't escape yourself.

This was a pretty strange book, but I still enjoyed it. Sometimes I wondered whether the main character was dreaming or making things up in her mind. Or whether things were really happening to her or not. I didn't really mind not knowing though. I liked how it was written and looked forward in getting back to reading it every day!

Yikes, this book was not my favorite. Usually I can find some redeeming quality about a book - the language, the writing style, the facts, the story, the characters... etc. This book was just plain Jane, run-of-the-mill, middle of the road book. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
