Very useful book if you're interested in starting your own consulting shop. Full of practical advice and useful forms. Worth a read.

I love this book for the dozens of ideas, examples, and questions it offers. Becoming a consultant is a big decision and I know many friends who would have benefited from thinking through their business goals more thoroughly. This book will help you do that. In particular, please spend time with the sections on knowing your special strengths (as a small and unknown business, you need something that will attract clients and show your best work), business planning, and your first year. The sections on planning your transition are very helpful, too.But this book is not just for those who are thinking of becoming a consultant. I have been a successful consultant for nearly ten years and LOVED the marketing chapter of this book. Elaine models extraordinary business development sense (her reputation in the field is amazing) and explains how we all can create a strong platform and presence (this is key for small firms who are trying to compete with larger, more established organizations with huge advertising and event sponsorship budgets). Her emphasis on steady, long-term relationship marketing is key. I love her ideas about how to write successful proposals.This book is packed with information and helpful links and references to additional resources. You don't need it all at once, but it will all be helpful at some point in your growth as a consultant. Every consultant should review it yearly for fresh ideas on how to build his or her business. A wonderful resource to have.

Biech has provided a highly useful, comprehensive companion workbook for her earlier book: The Business of Consulting.To help those not quite sure the entrepreneurial path is for them, she offers assessments. Then she gets to the nuts-and-bolts part of the business: The book covers marketing issues, legal issues, taxes, licensing requirements and the gazillion other things small business owners need to tackle in the first year. As an experienced marketer who is known as the "consultant's consultant" in the industry, Biech understands what it takes to succeed--the long hours, the many roles a small business owner must play in the early years, and how much networking plays in selling one's services.The templates she provides are invaluable in giving new consultants the "quick start" she promises. Such a book would have cut years off my learning curve had it been available when I started my own business decades ago. A great book from a highly successful consultant.

I disagree with the critical reviews stating this 2nd edition was written by a professional writer for people who should know better about how to set up a consulting practice. I guess these critics wouldn't be so acerbic if Elaine titled the book "Consulting for Dummies."It's an excellent book that is of value to anyone who has considered starting a consulting business (or any business for that matter)and can benefit from knowing the steps that must be taken to establish and successfully conduct business (doesn't that apply to anyone who has never been self-employed?). It provides a wide range of templates so you don't have to waste precious time setting them up and then revising them based on your mistakes. I highly recommend it to anyone who is employed (or looking for a job with an employer) who is considering consulting with the "do I or don't I?" attitude, in addition to those who have taken the consulting plunge.

A recent article in CNN Money indicates that the small businesses failure rate increased 40% between 2007 and 2010, exactly when I decided to launch my business. It needed to turn a profit within the first four months and be stable enough to support my family in the long run. I armed myself with many resources: the small business development unit of a nearby university, Chamber of Commerce, SCORE, an accountant and lawyer, informational interviews with successful business owners, and books and articles.The Consultants Quick Start Guide became one of my favorite tools. With so many decisions to make, clear thinking was a necessity, and that is where this guide excels. Using it was like having a small business consultant on my start-up team. As I responded to questions on the worksheets and read the chapters, confusion evaporated into clarity, and I made decisions that positioned my business for success.I am now a couple of years in, and am flipping through some of my start-up materials.
