My first introduction to Eckhart. Overall, good stuff. Short and sweet. But, at times a bit dry. However, I particularly like the spiritual angle of Christianity that Eckhart presents, thus the label of Christian mysticism. Most of the form of Christianity that I have come to know is very knowledge-driven, often lacking the spiritual aspect of it. This was a nice change for me.The basic premise of this book is the understanding of how to marry the soul with God, essentially allowing the kingdom of God to dwell richly within us and learning to walk more with God at the helm of our lives rather than our knowledge and understanding.Some of my favorite quotes found in this book:"God is closer to me than I am even to my own self. My very existence and being depends upon the fact that God is with me and is present.""The soul that knows God knows also how nigh the kingdom is, and she knows all of God's riches therein.""Only when you seek for nothing will you find God. And, in finding God, you will find everything and all things will remain within you.""If you would pray for something, you need only pray ''thy will be done'' and nothing more. Then everything will be given unto you."I highly recommend this short treatise into Christian spirituality. And, I look forward to reading more of Eckhart's stuff.
This book follows the thesis of the "One" articulated in other books by Meister Eckhart. Eckhart contends that "God" is "One" and that if the soul is to see "God" it must forget everything of itself and become lost. If there is anything substitute in the seeking of God even if it is peace, knowledge or the most sublime, outside the will of "God", you will not find "God". If you seek the will of "God" then you must accept whatever you receive as a gift from "God". Eckhart states that the soul has been created with such greatness that it can never rest and is unhappy until it arrives at the goodness of "God". The perfection of virtue of "God" arrives only with great struggle and "strength is made in perfect weakness". This is a very uplifting book that outlines some very critical teachings of Meister Eckhart of the "One". Eckhart does not seem to expound on the "specific means by which we can abide by the will of "God"; however, he seems to set us on the right course to true spirituality.
Easy to read and very interesting. While you feel that he spoke from real knowledge the spiritual life, you wonder how he came by it. You feel he was a bit coy. On the negative side, the book is too short. I don't like it when a book is broken up so that by the time you read all the pieces it's a very expensive book. I doubt Meister Eckhart would have done such.
Love Meister Eckhart`s thinking! Just wish it was not such a short book. Whenever I read anything by him, I am moved, stretched, inspired and deeply touched. I wish everyone, especially Christians would read him.
The inspired wisdom presented can benefit people from all faiths—broadening and lifting (while settling thought) to selfless service and unity with God.
No words, read for yourself. Nowhere else you will find the content in this sermon. I spent 10 years at one church and never heard a thing like this.
Meister Eckhardt had much in common with Eastern Orthodoxy with his understanding on the person becoming god by being transformed by God. Good start for those who are looking for a deeper level of spiritual truth.
If you want Christianity straight, much like the Pope delivers it, you can get it from Meister Eckhardt's sermons. He's a godyly and kind man who knows the truth from the Christian viewpoint, and explains it clearly.
