I have just finished Dara's book on Super Satellite Strategy. Let me preface this review by stating I have been grinding satellites as my main focus for 8 months, where I currently sit #1 on the Party Poker PPL leaderboard. I wouldn't consider myself a specialist, there are several people who are much better and experienced than myself, but after months of tedious ICM/FGS calculations, I feel like I had a strong handle on proper strategy prior to reading the bookMy reason for buying this book was simple. Outside of Tom Hall, Dara is widely considered the best in the format. I have the utmost respect for both of them. The thing about satellites is that they are so different from any other form of poker that sometimes the entire lens through which you view poker is shattered into pieces. You can not look at satellites through that same lens. As you gain more experience in satellites through work with software (I recommend icmizer2 and monkersolver), you start to develop a lot of theories you might consider batshit crazy. It makes you question every thing you do. My entire strategy behind satellites has been a sort of "brute force" approach where I simply run thousands of simulations of different game states and ask myself WHY I think the results come out the way they do. This takes countless hours and probably isn't the most efficient way to approach thingsWhat Dara's book has done is to confirm some of theories I had made myself. The affirmation alone was worth way more than the $10 I paid.For those of you with no experience, what you can expect is a solid theoretical foundation to playing satellites backed by hard math. It is simple to follow, but will take practice to implement "Gorilla Maths" in your own game. There is no substitute for doing the work yourself, but Dara has shortened your workload by covering the most common spots you will encounter in a variety of satellite situations. In my opinion the book is of great benefit to a player of any skill level who is looking to play satellites. In the first 30 minutes of reading, I guarantee you will pick up something that will increase your future expectation enough to cover the cost of the book 10 fold.-Marty "TJXOLOSFAN1" Mathis
I highly recommend. I'm a long time recreational player but have read numerous strategy books over the years and enrolled on a few online training courses. This satellite specific strategy book was revelationary to me and was a wealth of new information and concepts. It introduced some very important (and easy) calculations such as 'Chance of Cashing' and 'Average Cash Stack' that from now on will completely change my Satellite strategy. The authors have gone to great efforts using the latest Solver technology but have presented it in an easily understood manner. It is an absolute steal at the current price and is a must read for any poker player who plays satellite tournaments.
With satellites being one of the most profitable tournaments to play, it was somewhat surprising that this book hadn't been written earlier. Poker Satellite Strategy opened my eyes to the many counter-intuitive mistakes I commonly make when playing satellites. Now armed with the ability to calculate my chance of cashing, I can better judge the equity I need to make certain plays especially in the end game portion of the tournament, where one small mistake can ruin the chances of success. My only hesitancy in recommending this book is purely selfish, knowing that the information is so good that satellites will become much more difficult.
It's no exaggeration to call Dara O'Kearney the world's foremost authority on poker satellite strategy, and this book lays out everything he knows. Correct play in satellites can be EXTREMELY counter-intuitive (folding Aces pre-flop, anyone?), but Dara provides easy methods for quickly determining when to take risks and when to avoid them. If you have any interest in playing satellites, this is mandatory reading.
The book is a great introduction to all aspects of satellite play and provides a good base for becoming profitable in these games. I particularly found the early game section very beneficial coming from a cash background I never really thought about the early game ICM aspect. The common scenario section at the end is another great addition and I can see myself coming back to read it again as these spots come up over and over if you grind satellites frequently.
I've always considered myself a pretty good satellite player due to my decade long experience with the format, but even I learned a lot from reading this book. Thanks to the information in these pages, I always expect to be one of the best players in the field. If you want to learn how to play with the same level of confidence, then you should definitely get this book.
